Meet Me At The Roxy

Situated on the border of SoHo and TriBeCa, The Roxy Hotel New York is a rare boutique experience that encompasses the best in both hospitality and downtown NY culture. Not only is The Roxy located in perfect proximity to some of the city’s greatest dining and shopping destinations, the hotel itself is also home to some of the best in arts and entertainment. And with each of the 201 accommodations the hotel has to offer exuding both luxury and comfort, The Roxy has become one of the premier destinations for those out-of-towners looking to stay in the heart of it all.

The hotel itself lives in a triangular, red brick building adorned with cast-iron detailing calling to mind the industrial materials found all over the surrounding neighborhood of Tribeca. An old-fashioned marquee hangs out front as a nod to the city’s long running love affair with the entertainment industry. Venture inside the building and you’ll find yourself standing inside a 10,000-square-foot atrium offering a dramatic view reminiscent of mid-20th century buildings like the old Penn Station. With every guest room door visible from this vantage point, the effect is dizzying. And beyond each of those doors, you’ll find a mid-century modern aesthetic with hints of Art Deco and Regency consistent with TriBeCa’s industrial heritage. Each of these 201 accommodations exude maximum comfort and ocular enjoyment. And back on the ground floor, the touches of Art Deco scattered throughout and the occasional piano player performing in the lounge may bring to mind the romance of old-school New York in all its glory.

Just under the dazzling atrium, you’ll find the Roxy Bar– at night, a bustling spot for hand-crafted cocktails and seasonal American fare. In the center of it all, the aforementioned piano offers a rotating cast of some of NYC’s top jazz performers. And be sure to check out the Oyster Bar. Tucked inside, just off the atrium, this extension of the Roxy Bar offers an intimate space, a rotating DJ program and a selection of East-coast fare, all delivered daily and sourced from local waters like Narragansett Bay, NJ and Olde Salts, VA. On the weekends, brunch reigns supreme at Roxy Bar with benedicts and Bloody Marys taking center stage.

But it’s on the bottom floor of The Roxy that you’ll find entertainment galore. Descend down the staircase and you’ll find that entrance to The Django feels something like a portal to another world. A subterranean jazz club, with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls, The Django was modeled after the vintage cabarets of Paris. A dining area anchors a room beset with two bars specializing in specialty cocktails and a performance stage that boasts a state-of-the-art Meyer Sound system. All that, along with a rotating live jazz lineup, and the experience feels something like that of a golden-era supper club.

Adjacent to The Django, but with a separate entrance, you’ll find The Roxy Cinema. Taking its name from the esteemed 1920s motion picture palace, The Roxy Cinema is an intimate Art Deco-inspired cinema with 118 seats as well as craft cocktails and a gourmet concession stand. The screening program specializes in first-run independent films, rare archival prints and 35mm cult classics along with special cultural programming, cast and director question and answer sessions, artist collaborations and unique film series. Whether it’s a couple dropping in for a casual date or an enthusiast coming to see a favorite director, a visit to the Roxy Cinema is as rich an experience as the movies themselves.

Following such an eventful night on the town– and yes, in the case of The Roxy, the hotel itself may feel something like its own town– you may find yourself feeling the need for a caffeine fix. Luckily, you’ll find Jack’s Stir Brew on the ground floor to kickstart your day. Founded by Jack Mazzola, Jack’s began when Mazzola discovered a coffee making technique that gave a fuller flavor. Eventually patenting the idea, Mazzola then worked on a coffee farm in the Dominican Republic for a month before opening his first shop on 10th Street in the West Village. As the first organic, fair trade, shade-grown coffee shop in Manhattan, the success of Jack’s was practically instant. The Roxy Hotel is Jack’s seventh location in New York and serves classic and new favorites, plus vegan baked goods.

After you get your caffeine fix, there will be plenty to do in the neighborhood. And if you didn’t know, TriBeCa stands for the “Triangle Below Canal”. A coveted, affluent area in downtown New York, walk about and you’ll find a plethora of industrial, cast-iron buildings, some of which attracted artists in the ‘70s and ‘80s for their vast scale, now converted to luxurious lofts. TriBeCa also maintains a quiet, village feel with cobblestone streets, lush, pristine parks, and access to the Hudson River waterfront. One World Observatory is also just 13 blocks south.
